The idea behind the work:
I think my father wanted to be a painter. My clear memory of him painting dates back to when I was about 12. I remember him entering my room when I was painting. He watched my work for a while then took my pencil and tried to complete my painting. I have no memory of what I’d been painting, but I can remember how angry I was with him. That was the time when he told me about one or two prizes, he won in school painting competitions or something like that. His eyes twinkled with joy. As if my painting was a time capsule that took him back to his childhood; to the time when he’d been a painter. I didn’t say a word. He returned my half-finished painting. He came back from “Dreaming of Babylon” * I think it was his dreams that shaped the hard nucleus of my paintings. My brother named it “Phish-Phishy”. That’s what he does as he circles the room around and around talking to himself and rubbing his hands together. He goes to dream of Babylon. He’s no longer here.
